COP16

The 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity was held from 21 October to 1 November 2024 in Cali, Colombia, under the theme “Peace with Nature.” This meeting focused primarily on the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and marked a turning point by advancing the formal inclusion of youth and children in biodiversity negotiations.

Global Summit of Children and Youth for Biodiversity

On October 19 and 20, 2024, the Global Summit of Children and Youth for Biodiversity was held in Cali, within the framework of #COP16. It was a space where young voices came together to build alliances, share knowledge, and cultivate ideas for a more sustainable future, alongside local and global youth networks. From the Blue Zone and the Green Zone, the local and global perspectives were connected, exploring Multiethnic Futures, Harvesting Life, and the COP16 theme: Peace with Nature, promoting youth participation and the co-creation of solutions from the ground up.

Simulation COP16

The COP16 Youth Simulation is a training program designed to strengthen the capacities of young people in Cali and the Valle del Cauca region in environmental governance and biodiversity. Through an experience that combines virtual and in-person methodologies, the project recreates the real dynamics of international negotiations, allowing young people to understand the complexity, challenges, and tensions inherent in multilateral forums.

Peace with nature

Peace with Nature was a space where young people took the lead in the lead-up to #COP16. Environmental youth groups, institutions, and local leaders joined forces to address the challenges threatening the biodiversity of the Atlantic. It was a gathering to learn, dialogue, and act collectively, demonstrating that when we work together, we can build the territory we dream of.

Carbon markets

The Global Greengrants Fund awarded the Barranquilla+20 Foundation a grant aimed at strengthening capacities, providing information, organizing dialogues, researching, and creating tools related to carbon markets in Colombia, with the participation and support of Indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities. The project seeks to enhance the knowledge of people from the Orinoquía region, focusing on those in the department of Vichada, thereby ensuring they have opportunities to represent Colombia in national and international forums.

National Youth Consultation and Intergenerational Dialogue for Biodiversity

A group of 25 young people from different parts of the country involved in the Colombian Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN) expressed to decision-makers their priorities as young people regarding the care of biodiversity, which is increasingly threatened by climate change, the most palpable reality of our time.
